About Matcha: A Little More Than Just Green Tea
Matcha has become a familiar sight in cafés and specialty drink shops, appearing in everything from traditional tea to lattes, desserts and colourful specialty drinks. But there is much more to matcha than its distinctive green colour or its recent popularity. With centuries of history in Japan and a flavour all its own, matcha offers a unique foundation for both traditional and modern drinks.
At Love at First Sip, we especially love how versatile it can be. Matcha can be enjoyed on its own, balanced with creamy or sweet flavours, or paired with fruits and other ingredients to create something completely unexpected.
So, What Exactly Is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves. Unlike regular green tea, where the leaves are steeped in hot water and then removed, matcha is whisked directly into the drink. In other words, when you drink matcha, you’re consuming the tea leaf itself rather than simply drinking water that has been infused with it.
This gives matcha its characteristic colour, texture and flavour. Depending on the tea and how it has been prepared, matcha can range from fresh and vegetal to rich, smooth and pleasantly savoury. Its flavour can also vary considerably with the quality and origin of the tea, which is part of what makes exploring different matchas so interesting.
A Tradition Rooted in Japan
Matcha has a long history in Japan, where it became closely associated with the Japanese tea ceremony and the careful preparation and sharing of tea. Traditional preparation is relatively simple: matcha is whisked with hot water, traditionally using a bamboo whisk, until it becomes smooth and lightly frothy.
The ceremony surrounding matcha places as much importance on the experience as on the drink itself. Preparing and serving tea creates an opportunity to slow down, be present and share something with others. While modern matcha drinks may look very different from a traditional bowl of tea, that sense of connection and shared experience remains part of what makes matcha special.
What Does Matcha Taste Like?
If you’ve never tried matcha before, its flavour can be difficult to compare with anything else. It can have a fresh, grassy quality along with a gentle bitterness and the savoury depth known as umami. Higher-quality matcha can also have a natural sweetness and a remarkably smooth finish.
Those characteristics make matcha particularly interesting as an ingredient. Its earthy flavour works well with creamy ingredients, sweet fruits, vanilla and floral notes, while its natural bitterness can help balance sweeter flavours. Rather than simply adding a green-tea flavour to a drink, matcha can become an important part of its overall character.
Matcha, Our Way
This is where we have the most fun. At Love at First Sip, we enjoy taking familiar flavours and giving them a little twist, and matcha provides plenty of room to experiment.
One of our favourites is ube matcha, which combines matcha with the distinctive flavour and colour of ube. Ube is a purple yam widely used in Filipino cuisine, particularly in desserts, and its naturally sweet, nutty flavour makes an interesting partner for matcha’s more earthy character. It’s also a small reflection of the Filipino influence behind Love at First Sip and our appreciation for flavours that bring different traditions together.
That’s one of the things we enjoy most about creating drinks. They don’t have to fit neatly into a single category. A drink can be inspired by tradition while still being playful and modern, and different flavours and cultural influences can come together in ways that are both familiar and completely new.
More Than a Drink
For us, that’s part of what makes drinks so much fun. They’re not just something to pick up on the way somewhere; they can become part of an experience. A great drink gives people something to discover, talk about and share, whether they’re meeting for coffee, celebrating a milestone or gathering with friends.
That’s especially true at events. Whether we’re serving a wedding, shower, birthday, corporate gathering or private celebration, we want the drinks to feel like they belong there – to be something guests are excited to try and remember after the event is over.
So if you’ve been curious about matcha, there’s no better way to understand it than to give it a try. Whether you prefer it traditionally prepared or paired with something unexpected, there is a whole world of flavour beyond the familiar green cup.
